Brief History of K-Electric Company

Founding of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC)

In 1913, the British Government established the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) under the Indian Companies Act 1882. KESC was responsible for supplying electricity to the growing city of Karachi.

Nationalization of KESC

After Pakistan gained independence in 1947, Karachi underwent a massive expansion with respect to area and population. However, KESC’s infrastructure was not capable of handling the sudden increase in electricity demand. In 1952, the Government of Pakistan nationalized KESC and took control to inject a large investment into it.

Construction of New Electricity Generating Plants

Between 1953 and 1980, the Government of Pakistan constructed eight new electricity generating plants, adding a total capacity of 513 MV to KESC’s power grid.

Privatization of KESC

In 2005, the Government of Pakistan privatized KESC. The government retained 26% shares and transferred the remaining to a foreign consortium, allowing new owners to invest in its infrastructure to improve its efficiency and electricity generating capacity.

Acquisition by Abraaj Capital

In 2009, Abraaj Capital led by Arif Naqvi as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) took control of KESC.

Renaming to K-Electric

What are the different types of KE meters?

K-Electric has two kinds of digital meters: one is for single-phase connections, and the other is for three-phase connections.

What’s the voltage used by K Electric?

K Electric’s power lines include different voltages. They have 220kV, 132kV, and 66kV lines, with 71 grid stations, 20 auto transformers, and 181 power transformers.

What are the peak hours of KE?

During most of the year, from April to October, the KE peak hours are from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM. From November to March, it’s from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. These are the times when people use the most electricity.

Why do some places have no electricity sometimes while others do?

KE has a plan for this. They look at places and see if they lose a lot of electricity or not. If a place loses a lot, it might have no electricity for up to 7.5 hours when everyone wants power. But if it doesn’t lose much, it gets to keep the electricity on. This plan has worked really well in Karachi. In the past, almost everyone had power cuts, but now 75% of the places don’t. Other electricity companies are doing the same thing now because it’s a good idea.

What is Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA)?

Fuel prices can go up and down because of things happening in the world. In the electricity bill, if the cost of fuel goes up or down, it gets passed on to you, just like it does everywhere else in the country. This is called electricity Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA), and it’s approved by a group called NEPRA.

NEPRA looks at how much the KE fuel costs every month for all electricity companies, including K-Electric. K-Electric tells NEPRA how much they spent on fuel each month, and NEPRA checks to make sure it’s accurate. Then, they decide if your electricity bill should go up or down based on the fuel cost.

From July 2016 to June 2019, K-Electric customers didn’t have FCA in their bills because there were some delays. But from January 2020, it started being included, just like it is for everyone else in the country. So, if fuel costs go up or down, your bill might change too because of FCA.

What is a Supplementary Bill?

A Supplementary Bill from K Electric is like a follow-up bill. It’s sent to you when your first bill had a mistake, like if it didn’t charge you enough or had a calculation error. This second bill makes up for the difference between what you were originally charged and the real amount you owe for electricity. It might also include any extra fees or charges.
